Skin's pH - What is it and why should you know?

You may have seen some products floating around with the promise of balancing your skin’s pH levels. But, what is pH and why does this affect the feeling and appearance of your skin?

The pH scale ranges from 1 (most acidic) – 14 (most alkaline), with 7 being neutral. Skin is slightly acidic by nature with its optimal range hovering around 5.5, but there are many different factors that can affect or disturb your skin’s pH level. These factors include temperature changes, pollution, harsh chemicals, and last, but maybe most common, over-washing or scrubbing your skin.

Over-washing tends to occur when people feel they need to remove excess oil, blemishes, or other skin imperfections. But this may not the best way to achieve normalised skin and can compromise your skin’s pH. This is due to the fact that you are offsetting the equilibrium of the epidermis (top layer of skin) which can lead to dryness, irritation and discomfort due to a disruption to your skin’s acid mantle, compromising your outermost protective layer.

There are ways to help maintain pH balance:

1. Use a gentle facial cleanser

If you experience blemishes and tend to have acne prone skin, then a cleanser that is more acidic may help control break outs. A more alkaline cleanser is preferred if you want to maintain a balanced skin that is prone to eczema.

2. Moisturise

Hydrated skin is happy skin. Period.

3. Wear SPF

Not all skin is created equal, and different methods work for different people. That said, SPF is for everyone. Wearing sunscreen daily will help fight UV radiation that can alter your skin’s natural state.

We always recommend seeking the advice of a specialist or doctor if you experience anything unusual with your skin. Your skin is a source of protection. It represents who you are and shows the signs of life you’ve lived. We believe knowing your skin’s optimal state will help you find the right routine that ensures a healthy balance of oils and acidity in your skin, resulting in a happy, glowing expression.
